EU Ambassador Christina Lassen met today with Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri to congratulate him on his re-election as Speaker of Parliament and discuss the domestic and regional political situation. Ambassador Lassen reiterated the European Union’s commitment to supporting democratic processes in Lebanon. “I hope the positive momentum created by the parliamentary elections will translate into renewed parliamentary activity and swift work on the reform agenda,” Ambassador Lassen said.
Ambassador Lassen said that the EU is looking forward to the quick formation of a new government to consolidate the country’s stability and to achieve further economic development. “Now it is time for Lebanon to keep the momentum and make the most of the broad international support expressed at the international conferences organised this year,” she said. Stressing the importance of the follow-up to these conferences, Ambassador Lassen said that “the EU engages with the Lebanese authorities as well as with the citizens in their quest for reforms, sustainable growth, long-term development, jobs and economic prospects.”
Ambassador Lassen reiterated the EU’s steady commitment to preserve Lebanon’s security and stability and to contribute to meeting the country’s challenges and needs.
